Human-focused, language-oriented engagement with AI

The University Writing Program’s AI Literacy Lab is supported by the Department of English & Comparative Literature and the Digital Innovation Lab. Our mission is to foster a human-focused, language-oriented engagement with AI. We emphasize people and their needs and we explore the importance of language as a way of using and understanding AI. We aim to understand the relationships between humans and machines, ensuring that human concerns drive AI adoption. We want to support innovation with AI while ensuring sustainable approaches that protect the environment.

By studying AI and making informed decisions on its best use, we develop AI literacy. This literacy includes understanding the functions and concepts of AI. We are committed to literacy that addresses biases, misinformation, and the social impacts of AI. We strive to empower individuals to use AI publicly, professionally, and personally. Our goal is to create a society where AI is used responsibly and ethically, enhancing the quality of life for all.

We focus especially on the role of AI at UNC-Chapel Hill. We create resources that can be used by instructors and students. We offer leadership in developing guidelines and learning materials. And we model collaborations that will ensure critical use that gets the most out of AI for the University community.
